Office Offense

TO ERR IS HUMAN,
TO FORGIVE IS DIVINE.
THIS CONFESSION SEEKS YOUR COMPASSION…

I don’t know what poltergeist possessed me but as I passed a colleague in the hallway, I blurted out something so offensive I shocked both of us. But I never apologized. I did not know how to apologize. Excuses are generally the wrong apology and most certainly they were in this case. “I’m sorry” felt so inadequate. I simply said nothing, ever. This moment is one of the greatest regrets of my life and I cannot forgive myself.

ATONE REGRETS…

I’ve written an apology letter I never sent. I atone for it privately over and over again. I know that the office atmosphere was toxic at the time and I was dealing with it by being very sarcastic and flippant. I was quoting old media flippantly in a useless, passive aggressive attempt to call out the critical energy that was in the air at work. I now know you cannot deal with negative issues by burying them in mockery. The danger is it will come out at the wrong time, in the wrong place to the wrong person.
